We haven’t been very lucky with the weather in the last few days. The temperature dropped and the grey clouds wouldn’t go away. However, it was still nice to discover the Natur-Park.

The place previously held the Tempelhof railway yard. It was progressively shut down shortly after the Second World War and remained deserted for a while so that naturally the nature would take its right back on it.

We can still find the ton of rails and follow them through the trees and nature that grew over it. Some buildings are also still standing and are now recovered with graffitis.

I will definitely go back there in spring or summer to enjoy the place at its best shape of the year.

Berlin is an eclectic city. Anyone will be able to find something that they like in this city, since each and every district is different. We can find a gastronomic restaurant next to a dirty bar, or an art gallery next to a club. As to architecture, it is also quite the same: old buildings and new constructions are sitting next to each other. We will find modern architecture built after the fall of the wall and, at the same time, abandoned places that have been rotting for years.

I always like visiting those abandoned places especially because you can feel their history when you are there. I find it fascinating to wander around a building that was let down from one day to the other. We can still feel the boiling urge of the people leaving in there, or whatever was happening before it closed.

From the laughter of children running around in the Spreepark theme park, to the beers clinging among each other in the Bärenquell Brauerei, or the dives in the Bulb swimming pool and the Schwimmhalle of Pankow.

Today I wanted to share with you the shots I took during my last visit to the Schwimmhalle of Pankow. I went in October and the place was already quite ravaged.

The Schwimmhalle of Pankow was build in 1971 as a prototype and model for the future constructions of swimming pools in Berlin. It was acquired by the Berliner Bäderbetrieben in 1996 who closed it to start renovations. In 2001 it opened again, but only for a year – the maintenances costs were too high for them to reach their targets, which forced them to permanently close the doors to the swimmers and to empty the pool one last time.

Then, it illegally opened its doors to explorers, artists, and vandals.

Pretty much everything was either gone or smashed when I went back in October. We always expect to wander in places that will be in a rather bad state, but we can clearly recognize a place that has voluntarily been destroyed.

I read somewhere that the swimming pool received some unwanted guests back in 2013, who were the culprits for causing such damage. They destroyed every outer window, and at the same time everything that was still standing inside. They ended up lighting a fire in the basement where the sauna was, before running away.

The place is easily accessible. After having risked my life by climbing up a small wall to get through a broken window, I realized that the main door was completely open to strangers. Well done.

What adds charm to this place is its location. It is located in the super calm, green and familial district of Pankow. Getting in such a destroyed and colorful place that is full of graffitis, adds a great contrast with the outside and instantly gets us in a different atmosphere.

I’ve always been able to find a good side to each of the four seasons of the year. Some people like better the cold and some others prefer the warmth, but I think that I am part of those people that tend to appreciate each of them (however I have to admit, I like winter only for a week before strictly enduring it).

Getting into the Volkspark am Friedrichshain

Starting with autumn because it starts being chilly and dark outside, so we discover and enjoy our dear home again after neglecting it for a few weeks. The leaves of the trees start to change colors before falling off and recovering the floor with a colorful blanket. The degrees drop and the intense colors slowly disappear. Then, the leaves become dirty and hideous up to the next day when they will be gone as if they never existed.

Leaves on the ground
Leaves on the ground

We get the large jackets out and hide under blankets because winter is here, together with its December illuminations that are brightening  a sleepy world. Comes the snow that slowly falls from the sky, and the sadness of life becomes suddenly beautiful as the passengers walk, crossing the way of shadows that run to hide under a freezing silence. The lovers will lock themselves up at home and will enjoy moments that will last at least until spring. If you get quiet for a moment you might hear the ground softly vibrate, maybe will you even feel those sleepy souls that dream next to the fireplace. Until they wake up a few seconds later at the same pace than the buds that are coming back.

Beauty of nature
Beauty of nature

Every spring we witness thousands and thousands of rebirths: Our own among all the others. It’s time to wake up and open ourselves again. To take the time to discover again with half closed eyes because we are still blinded by the light that comes from the ground.

Surimpression of trees

And then, everything suddenly accelerates when comes the summer: The crazy season. The houses are deserted, the bodies mingle around under a sun that explodes and exposes. From now on, it’s impossible to hide from the shadow that doesn’t exist anymore. But who would be bothered about it anyway? And then dance, and dance, and dance.

Today I wanted to make an ode to autumn, because it’s at this time of the year that the city is quite magnificent – until the next season. I took all of those pictures this Monday at Volkspark am Friedrichshain where I often go for walks. It is located right in front of my place, so it could not be more practical!

Stattbad Wedding
Stattbad Wedding

_______________________

Now that autumn is well established and that its fantastic colorful leaves are everywhere on the ground, I decided to go out and enjoy thoses colors as they last. The idea on Friday was to go and take a look at what remained of the Stattbad in Wedding. I was quite saddened to hear about the closing of such a great location which was definitely participating in making Berlin so unique. Our dear Stattbad was a cultural place offering all type of events: Workshops, exhibitions, artists studios. It was opening as a club and inviting people to dance in its empty pool and in the warmth of its narrowed basements.

I stayed for a while looking at the remains of it, and I started walking again in the streets of Wedding until I reached the Bernauer Straße, Torstraße and ended my walk in Hackescher Markt.

I leave you to my day in pictures from Prenzlauer Berg to Wedding and Mitte, and to give a last tribute to the Stattbad that leaves us with plenty of good memories.
