Berlin est une ville éclectique. Chaque quartier est différent, chacun pourra y trouver son compte. On pourra trouver un des restaurants les plus fins à côté d’un bar crade, et vice-versa. On pourra y trouver des immeubles tout neufs, comme des immeubles abandonnés.
J’ai toujours aimé visiter ces lieux pleins de charmes et chargés d’histoire. Je trouve ca assez fascinant d’explorer un lieu qui a été laissé comme ca, du jour au lendemain, et dont on peut toujours y sentir l’once de vie qu’il a connu un jour.
Des rires des enfants dans le parc d’attraction Spreewald, aux tintements des bières de la Bärenquell Brauerei, jusqu’aux plongeons en boule des nageurs des piscines Bulb et de la Schwimmhalle à Pankow.
Aujourd’hui, je voulais partager avec vous ma dernière visite en date à la Schwimmhalle de Pankow. Je m’y suis rendue en octobre dernier, et l’endroit était déjà bien ravagé depuis un moment.
Berlin is an eclectic city. Anyone will be able to find something that they like in this city, since each and every district is different. We can find a gastronomic restaurant next to a dirty bar, or an art gallery next to a club. As to architecture, it is also quite the same: old buildings and new constructions are sitting next to each other. We will find modern architecture built after the fall of the wall and, at the same time, abandoned places that have been rotting for years.
I always like visiting those abandoned places especially because you can feel their history when you are there. I find it fascinating to wander around a building that was let down from one day to the other. We can still feel the boiling urge of the people leaving in there, or whatever was happening before it closed.
From the laughter of children running around in the Spreepark theme park, to the beers clinging among each other in the Bärenquell Brauerei, or the dives in the Bulb swimming pool and the Schwimmhalle of Pankow.
Today I wanted to share with you the shots I took during my last visit to the Schwimmhalle of Pankow. I went in October and the place was already quite ravaged.
La Schwimmhalle de Pankow a été construite en 1971 comme prototype et modèle pour les future constructions de piscines à Berlin. Elle fut récupérée par la Berliner Bäderbetrieben en 1996 qui ferma la piscine pour rénovations. Elle ouvra de nouveau en 2001 mais dû définitivement fermer ses portes aux nageurs l’année suivante, pour cause de coûts de maintenance bien trop élevés pour réaliser les chiffres attendus.
C’est ainsi qu’elle ouvra ses portes aux explorateurs, artistes et vandales.
The Schwimmhalle of Pankow was build in 1971 as a prototype and model for the future constructions of swimming pools in Berlin. It was acquired by the Berliner Bäderbetrieben in 1996 who closed it to start renovations. In 2001 it opened again, but only for a year – the maintenances costs were too high for them to reach their targets, which forced them to permanently close the doors to the swimmers and to empty the pool one last time.
Then, it illegally opened its doors to explorers, artists, and vandals.
En y allant en octobre, il ne restait plus grand chose. On s’attend toujours à se promener dans des endroits en sale état, mais on peut clairement repérer un endroit qui a été volontairement ravagé.
J’ai lu quelque part que la piscine avait été victime de vandales en 2013 qui y ont détruit tout ce qu’ils pouvaient. En allant des fenêtres de la façade jusqu’à tout ce qu’il s’y trouvait à l’intérieur. Ils sont partis après avoir mis le feu à la cave où se trouvait le sauna.
Pretty much everything was either gone or smashed when I went back in October. We always expect to wander in places that will be in a rather bad state, but we can clearly recognize a place that has voluntarily been destroyed.
I read somewhere that the swimming pool received some unwanted guests back in 2013, who were the culprits for causing such damage. They destroyed every outer window, and at the same time everything that was still standing inside. They ended up lighting a fire in the basement where the sauna was, before running away.
L’endroit est facilement accessible. Après avoir risqué ma vie en escaladant un rebord pour manquer de me couper la main en passant par une ancienne fenêtre, je me suis rendue compte que la porte d’entrée était totalement ouverte. Bien joué.
The place is easily accessible. After having risked my life by climbing up a small wall to get through a broken window, I realized that the main door was completely open to strangers. Well done.
Ce qui fait définitivement le charme de cet endroit est qu’il se situe dans un quartier calme, vert et familial de Pankow. Entrer dans cet endroit ravagé, plein de couleurs et de graffitis rajoute un contraste en plus et nous fait instantanément changer d’univers.
What adds charm to this place is its location. It is located in the super calm, green and familial district of Pankow. Getting in such a destroyed and colorful place that is full of graffitis, adds a great contrast with the outside and instantly gets us in a different atmosphere.
